The SM3840 is a high performance Data Acquisition Unit which samples data from hydrometeorological sensors.

The built-in intelligence allows the following functions:

Ø     data collection;

Ø     data processing and validation;

Ø     data visualisation ;

Ø     data storage;

Ø     data transmission to remote centres 

 

The registered data could be downloaded locally through a RS232 serial line or transmitted automatically to remote centres. The locally or remote data downloading shall  be realized   through  the proprietary software package WinACQ or INFO METEO 

 

The SM3840, due to the low consumption, can be powered by solar panel and battery.  The SM3840 manages also a removable memory. This memory is PC card type (PCMCIA compatible), easily removable from the SM3840 front panel, in which the sensors and station data may be stored permanently: the stored data can be transferred to a general purpose Personal Computer through a standard PCMCIA driver unit (reader).

 

 Data Display: 

All data collected by the data logger and all other station configuration parameters can be shown  to the operator on a liquid crystal display (LCD) of 40 characters (2 lines of 20 characters each) associated with a keyboard.

 

Electrical interfaces: ·

·      The SIAP intelligent sensors (RS485 output) are connected to the SM3840 through a multidrop serial line  up to a distance of  1 km and with a capacity of 32 sensors.

·      ON/OFF sensors (precipitation, sunshine duration, leaf wetness etc.) have separate inputs.

·       Interfaces are available to convert 4/20 mA sensors to RS485 output.

·       Serial interfaces compliant with the EIA RS232 standard are used for host data exchange:  radio-modem, PSTN telephone, GSM mobile telephone  personal computer, DCP radio-set (METEOSAT – GOES).

·      The Baud rate is 1200.

 

Sensor Data Processing: 

The SM3840 data logger executes many calculations on the data acquired by the connected sensors within time intervals and using parameters (i.e.: thresholds, coefficients, etc.) programmable directly by the operator, the main functions are:

Instantaneous values; averages; maximum and minimum, with time of occurrence; integral; accumulated values in a preselected interval (i.e.: for rain, wind speed, solar radiation, evaporation); time interval measurement (for leaf wetness and sunshine duration sensors); dew point; standard level atmospheric pressure reduction value (QFF, QFE,QNH); barometric tendency of past 3 hours.

 

Electrical discharges  protection: 

The input and output lines of the SM3840   are protected against over-voltages and surge  (spikes and transients) generated be external electromagnetic discharges, by arrester  devices (both gas and solid state). 

 

Data Download and Software Visualization:

The SM3840 instantaneous or historical acquired data could be locally downloaded or automatically transmitted to remote sites using different communication devices. The data could be downloaded and stored with the WinAcq package, the data could be saved in different standard and well world know formats like: (*DB, *.xls, *.txt, *.html). In agree with the user application it’s possible to configure different automatic schedulings, reports, data management and visualization formats.
